Lycopene - Reducing the Risk of Macular & Prostate Problems plus Many Cancers Lycopene is a carotenoid that gives tomatoes, pink grapefruit, etc, their red colour and its concentration in the body tends to be higher than all other carotenoids, particularly in the liver, lungs, prostate gland, colon & skin. Ongoing research suggests that lycopene is associated with reduced risk of macular degenerative disease, serum lipid oxidation and cancers of the lung, bladder, cervix and skin. A six year study by Harvard Medical School and Harvard School of Public Health, on the diets of more than 47,000 men showed a measurable relationship to reduce prostate cancer risk. As consumption of tomato products increased, levels of lycopene in the blood increased, and the risk for prostate cancer decreased by 34% by those who had ten or more servings of lycopene containing foods. Another study of men who had the highest amount of lycopene in their body fat, were half as likely to suffer a heart attack as those with the least amount of lycopene in their body fat. Each lycopene tablet contains the equivalent of two servings of lycopene, much more than from a pure tomato source! For added protection against many cancers lycopene is a must.
